Lois Harrison Jones Elementary School (formerly John B. Cary), a cornerstone of our community since its establishment in 1913 and rebuilt in 1954, has long stood as an example of educational innovation and excellence. In 1969, it was designated a model school, embarking on a journey of pioneering educational strategies that continue to this day.

In 2022, our school was distinguished as a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, a testament to our commitment to sustainability and environmental education. This accolade came just a year before a significant milestone in our history – in June 2023, the Richmond School Board honored the legacy of an educational trailblazer by renaming our beloved school after Dr. Lois Harrison-Jones.

Dr. Lois Harrison-Jones began her illustrious career in education in 1954 and ascended through the ranks of the Richmond Public School system to become the first Black female superintendent in Virginia and Richmond. Her tenure in educational leadership across various districts was marked by significant advancements in student achievement, a testament to her visionary approach to education.

Today, Lois Harrison Jones Elementary stands as an ECO Campus Green School, embodying the principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship in every aspect of our operations and curriculum. But why is being a Green School so important?

Why a Green School Matters:

  • Educational Impact: Green schools are vital in teaching our students about sustainability and environmental responsibility. By integrating sustainability literacy into our curriculum, we provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to tackle the global challenges of today and tomorrow.
  • Environmental Impact: Our Green School initiatives reduce our environmental footprint, conserve precious resources, and contribute to the broader goal of creating a more sustainable planet for future generations.
  • Community Impact: The journey towards becoming a greener school fosters collaboration, engagement, and learning within our school community. This process not only creates a healthier environment for our students and staff but also serves as a source of civic pride and a model for sustainable living in our community.
